My garage door makes a popping sound when the sun hits it. Is it breaking?
This is known as “Thermal Expansion” and is very common in Las Vegas, especially with darker-colored garage doors. As the metal panels heat up rapidly in the morning sun, they expand. If the bolts holding the hinges are tightened too aggressively, the metal has nowhere to move, causing a loud “pop” or “bang” as it shifts. While not usually dangerous, we can adjust the torque on your hinges and lubricate the contact points to silence the noise and prevent stress fractures on the panels.
